MMO anodes are a core component in electrochemical wastewater treatment, and their characteristics directly affect the possibility and value of recycling. This article will guide you through the types of spent electrolytic cells and their recycling value.
What Types of Spent Electrolytic Cells Are Found in Wastewater Treatment Plants ?
The types of spent electrolytic cells used for water treatment in wastewater treatment plants are mainly classified according to their process function and structural design, which is fundamentally different from electrolytic cells in industrial fields such as hydrogen production.
Classified by core process function
1. Electrochemical Oxidation/Advanced Oxidation Cells
Process objective: To directly oxidize and degrade organic pollutants, ammonia nitrogen, etc., in water through the anode.
Core electrodes (high-value part): The anode usually uses titanium-based metal oxide coated electrodes (such as MMO, DSA). The coating contains precious metals such as iridium and ruthenium, which are the most valuable part for recycling.
Cell structure: Commonly uses a "plug-in" design for easy electrode replacement. The electrode form is mostly a flat plate bipolar electrode.
Recycling focus: The focus is on recycling the precious metal-coated anode plates/grids.
2. Electrolytic Reduction Cells
Process objective: Mainly used for recovering heavy metals (such as copper) or degrading chlorinated organic compounds.
Core electrodes: The cathode is usually an iron plate, used for reducing and precipitating metals.
Recycling focus: If used for heavy metal recovery, valuable metals (such as copper) may be attached to the cathode and require separate processing.

Classified by cell structure and water flow method
This mainly affects the ease of disassembly and overall recycling
Tumbling electrolytic cell: Divided into several sections by partitions, with water flowing up and down within them.
Recirculating electrolytic cell.
Vertical flow electrolytic cell: Water flows vertically up and down.
Fixed-bed electrolytic cell: The cell is filled with conductive particles (such as activated carbon, zeolite) as bipolar electrodes for deep treatment. Note that the filler may contain adsorbed pollutants. MMO Anodes in Wastewater Treatment Applications
They are primarily used as anodes in electrolytic cells, utilizing electrocatalytic oxidation:
Direct oxidation: Pollutants directly lose electrons and are oxidized on the anode surface.
Indirect oxidation: Electrolysis of water generates highly oxidative hydroxyl radicals (-OH), which degrade organic pollutants.
Chlorine evolution reaction: In wastewater containing chloride ions, the anode may produce highly oxidative hypochlorite ions (ClO-), assisting in disinfection and oxidation.
