Recycle Titanium Anode from the Marine Shipping Industry

Feb. 03, 2026

Share:

Ships operate in high-salt, high-humidity marine environments for extended periods, making them highly susceptible to electrochemical corrosion. To extend the lifespan of hulls and critical equipment, many modern vessels utilize impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems, with titanium anodes as core components widely installed on the hull or near the propellers. These anodes generate a protective current through the electrolysis of seawater, preventing corrosion of the ship's steel structure.

During this process, the surface of the titanium anode is typically coated with a precious metal oxide coating (i.e., DSA, dimensionally stable anode) of ruthenium, iridium, etc., to enhance conductivity and durability. As the service life increases (generally 3-8 years), the coating gradually wears out, and the anode becomes industrial waste containing precious metals, entering the recycling process.

Sources of Titanium Anode Scrap

The following ship-related scenarios are the main sources of titanium anode scrap:

  • Ocean-going cargo ships and oil tankers: Large commercial vessels are generally equipped with ICCP systems, with dozens of titanium anodes installed on each ship, generating large quantities of scrap upon decommissioning.

  • Naval vessels and submarines: Military vessels have extremely high anti-corrosion requirements and widely use high-performance titanium anodes; their replacement cycle is stable, providing a reliable source of scrap.

  • Offshore platforms and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels: These fixed or semi-fixed facilities operate in harsh marine conditions for extended periods, resulting in faster titanium anode wear and higher replacement frequency.

  • Ships equipped with desalination units: Some ships have their own desalination systems, and their electrolysis units also use ruthenium-coated titanium anodes, which can be recycled after decommissioning.
