Titanium anode mesh scraps originates from printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing. Titanium anode waste is indeed widely found in the PCB manufacturing industry, especially insoluble titanium anodes used in the electroplating process. After disposal, these become high-value industrial waste containing precious metals such as ruthenium and iridium.
Application Principle of Titanium Anodes in PCB Electroplating
In the PCB manufacturing process, copper electroplating is a key step, used to metallize vias and thicken circuit lines. With the development of high-density interconnect (HDI) boards, packaging substrates, and other high-end products, traditional soluble phosphor bronze anodes are no longer sufficient to meet the requirements for uniform microvia plating. Therefore, more and more PCB production lines are adopting horizontal electroplating technology, and using insoluble titanium anodes (DSA, Dimensionally Stable Anode).
These anodes use industrially pure titanium as the substrate, coated with a layer of mixed metal oxides, commonly iridium oxide-tantalum oxide (IrO₂-Ta₂O₅) or ruthenium oxide-iridium oxide (RuO₂-IrO₂). This coating exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and corrosion resistance, undergoing only the oxygen evolution reaction during electroplating without dissolving itself, thus preventing anode sludge formation and maintaining a clean plating solution.

The Generation Process of Titanium Anode Mesh Scraps
Although titanium anodes are "insoluble," their surface coating gradually deactivates, peels off, or degrades under long-term electrolytic conditions:
Electrochemical Corrosion: Continuous operation in acidic plating solutions (such as sulfuric acid systems) causes the noble metal oxides in the coating to slowly dissolve, especially in high current density areas.
Mechanical Wear: In horizontal plating lines, the anode is transported synchronously with the PCB, subject to fluid erosion and micro-vibrations, accelerating coating fatigue and detachment.
Thermal stress cracking: During electroplating, localized temperature rises cause a difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the coating and the titanium substrate, initiating microcracks and ultimately resulting in flaking.
When the coating activity declines to the point where it can no longer maintain stable current efficiency, the anode is deemed "scrap" and enters its replacement cycle. These failed titanium anode plates/mesh become typical industrial waste containing precious metals.
