This article will help you understand what titanium electrodes are and what types of coatings they have. Huatuo actively recycles scrap titanium electrodes in the global market, transforming waste into high-value-added resources.

What is a Titanium Electrode?

A titanium electrode is a functional electrode material based on industrially pure titanium (TA1/TA2) with a metal oxide coating (such as ruthenium, iridium, platinum, or other precious metal oxides). It is also known as a titanium-based metal oxide-coated electrode (MMO) or a dimensionally stable anode (DSA).

What Are the Types of Titanium Electrode Coatings?

Titanium electrode coating types can be divided into the following categories based on application requirements:

Precious Metal Oxide Coatings

Ruthenium-based coatings (such as RuO₂): Primarily used for chlorine evolution reactions, they are suitable for applications such as the chlor-alkali industry and the electrolysis of brine. They effectively catalyze the oxidation of chloride ions.

Iridium-based coatings (such as IrO₂): Specifically designed for oxygen evolution reactions, they perform well in sulfuric acid electrolytes and can withstand high current densities.

Ruthenium-iridium hybrid coatings (such as RuO₂-IrO₂-TiO₂): Combining the advantages of both, they significantly improve corrosion resistance and conductivity, making them suitable for complex electrolysis environments. Platinum coating: Titanium substrates are plated with platinum (1-5μm). This coating is used for high-precision electroplating or specialty chemical synthesis, and offers excellent chemical stability.

Application Scenarios and Performance Comparison:

Coating typeTypical application scenariosCore Advantages
Ruthenium seriesChlor-alkali industry, seawater electrolysisLow chlorine evolution overpotential and strong acid resistance
Iridium seriesSulfuric acid electrolysis, fuel cellsHigh oxygen evolution stability and long service life
Platinum seriesHigh-end electroplating, medical equipmentExcellent conductivity and anti-pollution

The choice of coating depends on a comprehensive consideration of factors such as electrolyte composition, current density, and cost. For example, ruthenium-based coatings are preferred in the chlor-alkali industry, while iridium-based coatings are preferred in strong acid environments.
