Where to Find Titanium Grade 7 Scraps

Nov. 11, 2025

Share:

Waste titanium materials are generated during the production, processing, or other related industrial processes of titanium alloys. These scraps can come from multiple sources, including discarded manufacturing parts, waste from cutting, milling, and welding processes, and waste titanium alloy materials. Due to the unique processing characteristics of titanium and titanium alloys, the yield of processed materials is relatively low, generally around 50%, resulting in a large amount of titanium alloy scrap. This article will guide you on how to find titanium grade 7 scrap and maximize your value.

What's the titanium grade 7 scrap?

Titanium grade 7 scrap (Grade 7 titanium alloy scrap) refers to waste materials generated during the production, processing, or use of titanium alloys. Its composition is a titanium-palladium alloy (Ti-0.2%Pd), belonging to high-value renewable resources.

The biggest characteristic of titanium grade 7 material is its corrosion resistance. With the addition of 0.2% palladium, it exhibits extremely strong resistance to high-temperature chlorides and acidic environments (such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid), earning it the title of "King of Corrosion Resistance."

Grade 7 titanium materials are primarily used in high-end applications such as chemical pipelines, marine equipment, nuclear power plant cooling systems, and medical implants.

How to determine if titanium waste belongs to Grade 7?

To determine if titanium waste belongs to the Grade 7 category of titanium-palladium alloy (Ti-0.2%Pd), a comprehensive assessment is required through the following steps:

  • Chemical Composition Analysis

The core characteristic of Grade 7 titanium alloy (UNS R52400) is that it contains 0.12%~0.25% palladium (Pd), with the remainder being titanium (Ti). The palladium content in the waste needs to be detected using spectroscopic analysis. If the result is within this range, it may belong to Grade 7. Simultaneously, impurity elements must be controlled (e.g., Fe≤0.3%, O≤0.25%, C≤0.08%).

  • Physical and Mechanical Property Verification

Density: The density of Grade 7 is 4.51 g/cm³, which can be preliminarily determined by measuring the density of the waste.

Mechanical Properties: Annealed tensile strength is 345~448 MPa, elongation ≥27%. If the waste retains its original processed state, it can be verified through a tensile test.

  • Corrosion Resistance Test

Grade 7 exhibits significantly better corrosion resistance than industrial pure titanium in reducing acids (such as dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid) and chlorine-containing media. The corrosion rate of the waste in a specific medium (such as 5% hydrochloric acid solution) can be observed through immersion tests; excellent performance may indicate Grade 7.

  •  Surface and Morphology Inspection

• Surface Condition: Grade 7 waste should be free of oil, scale, and other contaminants.

• Morphology Classification: Classified by standard into block form (≥100mm or <100mm) and shavings, which must meet dimensional requirements.

Where can I find titanium grade 7 scrap?

Titanium grade 7 (Ti-0.2%Pd) scrap mainly originates from industries and equipment where its high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility are applied. You can find titanium grade 7 scrap primarily in the following typical application areas and corresponding equipment:

1. Chemical and Marine Engineering

Application Equipment: Chemical pipelines, reactors, heat exchangers, offshore platform structural components, seawater desalination equipment, etc.

Reason: Titanium 7 has extremely strong resistance to highly corrosive media such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as chloride environments, making it suitable for equipment exposed to corrosive media for extended periods.

2. Nuclear Energy

Application Equipment: Nuclear reactor cooling system pipelines, steam generator heat transfer tubes, nuclear waste disposal tanks, etc.

Reason: Resistant to radiation and high-temperature liquid metal corrosion, and required to maintain structural integrity under extreme accident conditions.

3. Medical Field

Application Equipment: Implantable medical devices (such as joint prostheses, dental implants), surgical instruments, etc.

Reason: Excellent biocompatibility and the need for long-term stability within the human body.

4. Energy and Environmental Protection

Application Equipment: Hydrogen energy storage and transportation systems (such as hydrogen storage tanks), solar thermal power generation collectors, tidal power generation turbines, etc.

Reason: Lightweight, high-strength, and corrosion-resistant, suitable for the lightweight and durability requirements of new energy equipment.

5. Other Industrial Fields

Application Equipment: Precision electronic components, model aircraft parts, high-end outdoor equipment (such as trekking poles), etc.

Reason: Balancing strength and corrosion resistance, suitable for applications with high material performance requirements.
